Taste Champagne Hosted By Tyson Stelzer: Australia’s Most Comprehensive Champagne Tasting

BlackEvents is proud to announce Taste Champagne, a series of trade, media and public tastings in Sydney and Melbourne in September 2014, hosted by International Champagne Writer of the Year, Tyson Stelzer.

Featuring a total of 52 champagne houses, growers and cooperatives showcasing their latest cuvées, Taste Champagne is the most comprehensive champagne tasting of the year.

In conjunction with BlackEvents, Stelzer has initiated Taste Champagne in response to a call from trade and media for an up-to-date, annual champagne tasting. The public are invited for a rare behind-the-scenes look into the latest offerings from the world’s most famous sparkling region.

Growth in champagne consumption in Australia in the past decade has ranked among the strongest in the world. In 2013, Australia ascended to the 7th largest champagne importer, equal 5th with Sweden for champagne consumption per head of population.

“But if you delve into the statistics more closely, the picture is not nearly so rosy,” reveals Stelzer. “In 2013, the average bottle price of champagne imported into Australia was lower than that of any of Champagne’s other 15 largest importing countries. Australia also ranks lowest in both prestige cuvée and rosé consumption. Australia’s interest in champagne growers and cooperatives is also statistically significantly lower than any of Champagne’s other largest importers.”

Taste Champagne is Stelzer’s response to this situation, purposely assembling a wide diversity of hundreds of cuvées from 30 houses, 18 growers and 4 cooperatives in the same room. This unprecedented list features such prominent brands as Dom Pérignon and Krug alongside famous growers including Egly-Ouriet and Larmandier-Bernier. In the spirit of champagne, Stelzer and BlackEvents believe they deserve to be showcased together.

Taste Champagne provides a unique opportunity to discover unfamiliar champagne brands, while becoming reacquainted with familiar labels. At a time when consumers and wine trade are eager to explore new tastes, Taste Champagne offers the perfect forum.

Tyson Stelzer is the definitive expert on Champagne and has been internationally recognised as International Champagne Writer of the Year 2011 and Australian Wine Communicator of the Year 2013. Stelzer is well known for his sell-out book, ‘The Champagne Guide 2013-2014’, named “The best guide ever published on champagne” by Huon Hooke in the Sydney Morning Herald.

BlackEvents specialises in creating exclusive and memorable events and draws upon a wealth of experience to run tastings and dinners in conjunction with leading prestigious wine houses, vineyards and restaurants Australia-wide. Founder, Craig McDonald, is proud to be part of growing the champagne category, celebrating all brands and growers with such events.

Held in both Sydney and Melbourne, this first-of-its-kind event is supported by Antipodes Water and Riedel Glass.
